Exploring the History of ORT

ORT America was formed in 2007 as a result of a merger of American ORT (founded in 1922) and Women's American ORT (founded in 1927). From the moment they began, both organizations grew and flourished, providing the greatest financial support to World ORT’s central budget from any country in the world. When they merged, the created a more streamlined organizational structure, maximizing the contributions they could send directly to the programs and bringing their individual supporters together to form a family of 60,000 members

Like members of American and Women's American ORT previously, ORT America members come together in groups and chapters driven by geography, professions or by specific interests. You can find a listing of regional offices and interest groups on our ORT Netowrks page. If you don't see a group local to you or want more information, please contact us and we'd be glad to help you find the right ORT entréefor you.

As a national organization that is part of the broader Jewish community, ORT America will often join coalitions with other Jewish organizations to take positions on domestic and international issues integral to maintaining a democratic society. ORT America is proud to be a member of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, the Jewish Council on Public Affairs and the American Jewish Press Association. Our members regularly represent World ORT and ORT America’s interests as a non-governmental organization at meetings within the United Nations, both at the Department of Public Information and at the Economic and Social Council, where World ORT has consultative status.

Educating Individuals, Impacting Communities and Improving the World - this is our mission our commitment to supporting Jewish values, strengthening Jewish identity and providing the educational opportunities that help people help themselves.
