The Story of Rub-a-Dub

Doreen Hermelin headshot The story of how Rub-a-Dub got its name is a great one. In 1975, “Instant Game” lottery tickets were introduced, and David Hermelin and his friend, the late Norman Folbe, decided it would be fun to buy a bunch of tickets and invite a few friends over to David and Doreen’s house for lox, bagels, and “ticket rubbing”. They called on their friend, Paul Borman, owner of the Farmer Jack grocery chain, to purchase tickets from his stores. The news spread of what they planned to do and soon 100 people were coming to the Hermelin’s home for a party, taking place in their garage, to “rub-off” tickets. Imagine the excitement when Eleanor (Folbe) Jackier won $10,000, which was split amongst all those who attended! After the party, David realized that this was a great way to raise funds for a cause that he was most passionate about ORT. Thus the Rub-a-Dub event was born.
