Rub-a-Dub

Rub-a-Dub 2017 took place on Tuesday, August 15th at Franklin Hills Country Club. The event, which is ORT Michigan’s largest fundraiser of the year and considered the premier charity event of the summer, attracted over 400 attendees and generated nearly $515,000 for ORT.

Just like at every Rub-a-Dub, this year’s event consisted of a raffle with a $5,000 Somerset Collection gift card as the grand prize, in addition to an extensive silent auction with a variety of valuable items donated by local, high-end retail stores and restaurants. A live auction offered trips, jewelry, automobile leases, and one-of-a-kind experiences that money cannot buy. In the spirit of the first Rub-a-Dub event, which grew out of a home-grown gathering in 1975 at the home of Doreen and the late David B. Hermelin, guests were given Instant Lottery Tickets to “rub off” with the hope that any earnings would be donated back to ORT. All of this was complemented by great food and the opportunity to network with metro Detroit’s most influential business leaders and an audience with significant purchasing power. The event also raised funds through a 200+ page Ad Journal that was distributed to all guests at the event and through corporate sponsorships. Finally, the 2017 event featured live music by the Detroit-based electro-pop violin band, Nuclassica.

Proceeds from the 2017 Rub-a-Dub fundraiser supported the final phase of renovations at the Kfar Hassidim Youth Village in Israel, which had not been updated in nearly 60 years. This youth village serves 350 at-risk teenagers annually, who have come to Kfar Hassidim as their last chance at academic success because they have failed in the conventional school system. Specifically, proceeds raised from the ad book funded the renovations of 1 of the auditorium in the youth village, while an on-site appeal during the event successfully funded the 2nd. Thanks to our generous Rub-a-Dub ad donors and event attendees, as well as the numerous Detroiters supporting this life-changing project, ORT Michigan has raised over $3 million to date to fully transform the Kfar Hassidim Youth Village into a state-of-the-art, 21st century campus, making it possible for the kids of Kfar Hassidim to reach their full potential, build better futures for themselves, and become contributing members of Israeli society.
